Scripture Readings

  • Primary Reading: Exodus 26-27

Key Verse

Exodus 26:30 — “And thou shalt rear up the tabernacle according to the fashion thereof which was shewed thee in the mount.”

Devotional Thought

It is mid-June, and perhaps you are tending a garden or a project that requires patience—a fence, a shed, a quilt, a relationship. Exodus 26–27 is God’s detailed blueprint for the tabernacle, and it is tempting to skim the cubits and sockets as ancient construction specs. But look closer: every curtain, loop, and tach had a purpose. The ten curtains of fine twined linen, blue, purple, and scarlet, with cherubim worked in, were not merely decorative. They formed a dwelling place where the holy God would meet with His people. The fifty gold taches coupling the curtains into one tabernacle, the goats’ hair covering, the rams’ skins dyed red, the badgers’ skins above—each layer protected and set apart. The boards of shittim wood overlaid with gold stood in silver sockets, held by bars, a structure both sturdy and beautiful. And within, the vail of blue, purple, and scarlet separated the holy place from the most holy, where the ark and mercy seat rested. Outside, the brasen altar with its horns and network grate, and the court with its hangings and gate, taught that approach to God requires sacrifice and order.

What does this ask of us today? It asks us to remember that God is not casual about how we come to Him. In a season when many treat faith as a vague sentiment, Exodus insists that holiness has shape. The lamp was to burn always with pure beaten olive oil, tended by Aaron and his sons from evening to morning. That is a picture of vigilant, ordinary faithfulness. Your daily reading, your quiet prayers, your small obediences—these are the oil and the wick. The tabernacle was portable, built for a pilgrim people, and so is our worship. We do not construct curtains, but we do order our lives around His presence. The same God who gave Moses the pattern on the mount gives us His Word and Spirit to shape our days. Let the precision of these chapters stir reverence, and let the lampstand remind you: keep the light burning, even tonight.

Reflection

  1. The tabernacle required exact obedience to the pattern shown on the mount—where in your life has God asked for careful, unhurried obedience rather than quick improvisation?
  2. The lamp was to burn always before the LORD; what would it look like for you to tend the light of your devotion from evening to morning in this season?

Prayer

Lord God, You dwelt among Your people in a tabernacle of curtains and boards, and You have drawn near to us in Christ. Teach us the reverence of Moses, who built according to the pattern shown him. Forgive our careless worship and our hurried prayers. Help us to keep the lamp burning—not with our own brilliance, but with the pure oil of Your Word and Spirit. As Aaron tended the light from evening to morning, so may we be faithful in the small, hidden hours. Make our lives a dwelling place for Your presence, and let all we do be ordered by Your holy will, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
