Scripture Readings

  • Primary Reading: Song of Solomon 2-3

Key Verse

"As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste." — “Song of Solomon 2:3”

Devotional Thought

The Song of Solomon is often read as a celebration of human love, but for the believer, it serves as a profound shadow of the relationship between Christ and His Church. In today’s reading, we see a longing for intimacy, a recognition of the unique beauty of the Beloved, and the peace found in His presence. The image of the apple tree provides a sanctuary—a place of shadow and sweetness—reminding us that in a world of chaos, the Lord is our ultimate refuge.

Our current world often mirrors the restlessness we see in these chapters. In our own communities, we see the tragic consequences of a heart without peace. Just this week, news reached us of a desperate man in Fayette County who, driven by turmoil, forced a driver to take him to a historic church at gunpoint, only for the encounter to end in a fatal standoff. It is a sobering reminder that while the church building is a place of sanctuary, the true peace that passes all understanding is found not in a location, but in a Person.

When we “sit down under His shadow,” as the bride does in chapter two, we are not merely escaping the heat of the day, but the heat of a broken world. The “sweet fruit” of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith—is the only lasting sustenance for a soul exhausted by the noise of conflict and the grief of loss. Whether we are facing national division or personal crisis, the invitation remains the same: come away to the shadow of the Almighty.

Let us seek today to be not just observers of the Word, but participants in this divine romance. To know the Beloved is to find a love that does not fail, a shelter that cannot be shaken, and a sweetness that the world cannot provide. In the midst of the storm, there is a shadow of delight waiting for those who call upon His name.

Reflection

  1. In what areas of your life are you currently seeking “shadow” or refuge, and have you brought those needs to the Lord today?
  2. How can the “sweet fruit” of the Spirit be made evident in your interactions with others who are currently in a state of turmoil?

Prayer

O Lord, our Eternal Beloved, we thank Thee for the shelter of Thy grace and the sweetness of Thy presence. In a world of unrest and sorrow, be Thou our sanctuary. Grant us the grace to abide in Thy love, that we may reflect Thy peace to all we encounter. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
