Scripture Readings

  • Primary Reading: Proverbs 17-18

Key Verse

"The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe." — “Proverbs 18:10”

Devotional Thought

In the midst of a world that often feels like it is fracturing, the Book of Proverbs provides us with timeless anchors for the soul. Today’s readings speak profoundly to the power of the tongue and the necessity of a quiet, humble heart. We are reminded that “death and life are in the power of the tongue,” and that the words we choose can either build a bridge of peace or ignite a fire of contention. In an age of instant reaction and public outcry, the wisdom to “shutteth his lips” is not a sign of weakness, but of a disciplined spirit.

We see this tension playing out in the news today, as reports emerge of deadly attacks on airports in Riyadh and escalating hostilities in the Middle East. When geopolitical strife erupts and the world descends into chaos, our instinct is often to find safety in political alliances or military strength. Yet, the world’s “strong cities” are often built on the shifting sands of conceit and pride. The headlines of war and blockade remind us that human security is fragile and that the pursuit of peace through power is often a cycle of further conflict.

For the believer, however, there is a different kind of security. Proverbs tells us that the name of the Lord is a “strong tower.” This is not a physical fortress of stone and mortar, but a spiritual refuge found in the character, promises, and presence of God. When the noise of the world becomes deafening and the reports of tragedy weigh heavy on our hearts, we are invited to run into that tower. To trust in His name is to find a peace that transcends the borders of nations and the volatility of earthly leadership.

As we navigate our own lives, let us strive to be agents of that peace. Let us cover transgressions with love rather than repeating them to separate friends. Let us seek knowledge with a prudent heart and offer words that bring life rather than death. In a world of shouting, let the quiet confidence of one who rests in the Strong Tower be our testimony.

Reflection

  1. In what areas of my life am I relying on a “strong city” of my own making rather than the Strong Tower of the Lord?
  2. How has my speech today either brought life or contention to those around me?

Prayer

O Lord, Thou who art our refuge and our strength, we beseech Thee to guard our lips and govern our hearts. In a world shaken by strife, grant us the grace to seek Thy peace and the wisdom to trust in Thy holy name. May we run unto Thee in all our adversity and find therein a safety that passeth all understanding. Amen.
