Key Verse
"Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter days." — “Proverbs 19:20”
Devotional Thought
The book of Proverbs often contrasts the fool with the wise, not by intellectual capacity, but by a willingness to listen. In Proverbs 19 and 20, we see a recurring theme: the danger of haste and the value of a listening heart. The fool “hasteth with his feet” and later finds he has wandered, while the wise man understands that true progress is built upon the foundation of counsel and correction.
In our current world, we see the tragedy of haste and the failure of counsel in the fragile state of global peace. We hear of “energy ceasefires” proclaimed in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, only to see them violated almost immediately by strikes on power plants and critical infrastructure. When diplomacy is rushed or based on fragmented understandings, the result is often further confusion and continued suffering for the innocent. It serves as a sobering reminder that human agreements, however hopeful they seem, are brittle without a foundation of genuine integrity and a shared commitment to truth.
Likewise, we see the devastation of impulsive violence in our own backyard, with reports of senseless shootings in Harris County. Such acts are the ultimate expression of the “perverse lip” and the “foolish heart” described in Proverbs. They represent a total abandonment of the counsel of peace and the instruction of love, leaving families broken and communities in mourning.
Yet, amidst the chaos of geopolitical instability and local tragedy, the Psalmist calls us to a different posture: “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good.” This is not a call to ignore the darkness, but to anchor ourselves in a mercy that “endureth for ever.” When the world feels unstable and the promises of men fail, the mercy of God remains the only sure foundation. We are called to be a people who hear the counsel of the Spirit, receive the instruction of the Word, and walk in integrity even when the path is steep.
Reflection
- In what areas of my life am I “hasting with my feet,” and where do I need to stop and seek godly counsel?
- How can I cultivate a heart of gratitude for God’s enduring mercy even when the news of the world is discouraging?
Prayer
O Lord, our Rock and our Redeemer, we beseech Thee to grant us a spirit of wisdom and a heart inclined to Thy counsel. In a world of strife and broken promises, keep us steadfast in Thy truth. We pray for the suffering in distant lands and the grieving in our own streets; may Thy mercy, which endureth for ever, bring comfort to the brokenhearted and peace to the violent. Teach us to walk in integrity and to trust in Thy goodness above all earthly powers. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
