Scripture Readings
- Primary Reading: Song of Solomon 1
- Secondary Reading: Psalms 124
Key Verse
"Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine." — “Song of Solomon 1:2”
Devotional Thought
The Song of Solomon opens not with a lecture on morality or a chronicle of history, but with the raw, breathtaking intensity of love. It is a celebration of the bond between two souls, a reminder that the capacity for deep, affectionate love is a divine gift. In a world that often feels cold, clinical, or fragmented, the Bride’s longing for her beloved reminds us that we were created for connection—not just in a physical sense, but in a spiritual and emotional union that transcends the ordinary.
We see this longing mirrored in the world around us today. In news reports from France, we see crowds gathering in Marseille to protest against racism and violence. Such protests are, at their core, a longing for a different kind of love—a love for one’s neighbor that overcomes hatred and tribalism. When the world is torn apart by the “wrath” mentioned in Psalm 124, the antidote is the kind of selfless, devoted love that the Song of Solomon celebrates.
The contrast is stark: on one hand, we see the fragility of human peace, with heightened alerts in the Middle East and the lingering shadow of conflict. On the other, we have the eternal truth that God’s love is “better than wine”—more satisfying than any earthly pleasure and more enduring than any political alliance. Our primary security does not lie in the strength of our governments or the silence of our enemies, but in the love of the Creator who sustains us.
As we navigate the complexities of this week, let us remember that the greatest force in the universe is love. Whether it is the intimate love between a husband and wife, the sacrificial love of a friend, or the overwhelming love of God for His people, it is this love that gives life meaning. Let us seek to be conduits of that love in a world that is desperately thirsty for it.
Reflection
- In what areas of my life have I settled for “wine” (earthly comforts) when God is offering a love that is far better?
- How can I practically demonstrate the love of Christ to someone who feels alienated or hated in today’s divided society?
Prayer
O Lord, who hast made heaven and earth, we thank Thee for the gift of love that bindeth hearts together. Grant us, we beseech Thee, the grace to love one another with a pure and steadfast spirit, that we may reflect Thy glory in a world of darkness. Keep us secure in Thy tender care and deliver us from all fear, for our help is in Thy holy name. Amen.
Psalm Verse
Psalm 124:8 — “Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.”
