Scripture Readings
- Primary Reading: Revelation 19
Key Verse
Revelation 19:11 — “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.”
Devotional Thought
The nineteenth chapter of Revelation opens not with a whisper but with a roar. John, exiled on Patmos, hears what sounds like the voice of a great multitude, like many waters, like mighty thunderings. Heaven is not silent. It is loud with praise. The great harlot—that seductive system of rebellion that corrupted the earth and drank the blood of the saints—has fallen, and the smoke of her judgment rises forever. The four and twenty elders and the four living creatures fall down and worship, and a voice from the throne commands all servants of God, small and great, to praise Him. Then comes the announcement that should make every believer’s heart leap: the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready. She is arrayed in fine linen, clean and white, which is the righteousness of the saints. Blessed are those called to the marriage supper of the Lamb.
But the chapter does not end at the banquet table. Heaven opens again, and a white horse appears. The rider is called Faithful and True. His eyes are flames of fire; on His head are many crowns; His vesture is dipped in blood; His name is The Word of God. The armies of heaven follow Him on white horses, and out of His mouth goes a sharp sword. He treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God, and on His thigh is written: KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. The beast and the false prophet are taken and cast alive into the lake of fire. The remnant are slain by the sword of His mouth. It is a scene of terrifying majesty and perfect justice.
We live in a world that often feels like the harlot still reigns—where evil seems unchecked, where the blood of the innocent cries out, where the proud sit in seats of power and the humble are trampled. But Revelation 19 declares that the story does not end there. The Lamb who was slain is the Lion who returns. The One who rode into Jerusalem on a donkey will ride out of heaven on a white horse. The marriage supper is coming. The King is coming. And His name is Faithful and True.
As April draws to a close and spring deepens, we are reminded that resurrection is not the end of the story either. Jesus rose, and He ascended, and He is coming again. The same Lord who walked the dusty roads of Galilee will split the sky with a sword in His mouth and a crown on His head. Today, we wait. We worship. We make ourselves ready in the fine linen of His righteousness. And we sing Alleluia—not because the battle is over, but because the victory is already won.
Reflection
- The bride is arrayed in fine linen, clean and white, which is the righteousness of the saints. Am I daily clothing myself in Christ’s righteousness, or am I trusting in my own goodness to make myself ready for His return?
- The rider on the white horse is called Faithful and True, and His name is The Word of God. Do I truly live as though the Word of God is the final authority—the sharp sword that will one day judge the nations—or do I treat it as merely a book of comfort and not a book of coming conquest?
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, Faithful and True, we worship You. You are the Lamb who was slain and the King who is coming again. We praise You for the marriage supper that awaits every soul washed in Your blood. Clothe us in Your righteousness, clean and white, and keep us faithful until that day. Give us courage to speak Your Word boldly, for it is the sword that will one day smite the nations. We long for the day when every knee bows and every tongue confesses that You are King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Come quickly, Lord Jesus. Amen.
