Scripture Readings
Devotional Thought
The reading plan rests today, and so the assigned passage is empty. That emptiness is itself worth noticing, because it places us in good company. Scripture is full of holy pauses. Between the last verse of Deuteronomy and the first of Matthew, four hundred silent years stretch out, years in which no prophet spoke and Israel waited in the dark. Between the ascension of Christ and the day of Pentecost, ten quiet days passed in an upper room while the disciples prayed. Between Good Friday and Easter morning, the tomb held its breath. God is not absent in the blank spaces; He is at work where we cannot yet see.
Think of the people who lived inside such silences. Hannah wept year after year at Shiloh before a son was given. Simeon waited in the temple, righteous and devout, until at last he took the Christ child in his arms. Anna served God with fastings and prayers night and day, and she too had to wait. None of them knew the hour of their consolation. They simply kept faith in the waiting, trusting that the God who had promised would not forget.
There is an ordinary grace in this. April is ending; the first flush of spring has passed, and the garden settles into the slower work of growing. Most of the Christian life looks like that—not mountaintop revelations, but faithfulness on days when the reading is short or the page is blank. The Lord who fed Israel with manna in the wilderness still gives daily bread, and sometimes the portion for a given day is small. Small does not mean withheld.
So let today’s open space be a Sabbath of the soul. Let it remind us that we do not live by constant stimulation but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God—including the word that tells us to be still. The psalmist said his soul waited in silence for God alone. Perhaps that is today’s assignment. Perhaps the blank page is not a gap in the plan but an invitation within it.
Reflection
- What might God be saying to you in the quiet places of your life where He seems to be doing nothing visible?
- Where are you tempted to fill a silence with noise or busyness rather than waiting on the Lord?
Prayer
Father, thank You for the gift of this quiet day and the reminder that You are at work even when we cannot see Your hand. Teach us to wait as Hannah waited, to watch as Simeon watched, to serve as Anna served, until Your promises are fulfilled in Your perfect time. Guard us from the restless need to fill every silence with our own noise. Let our souls wait in silence for You alone, for our expectation is from You. Feed us with today’s portion, however small it may seem, and make us faithful in the ordinary hours. In the name of Jesus we ask it. Amen.
