  • Primary Reading: Exodus 19-20

Key Verse

Exodus 20:1 — “And God spake all these words, saying,”

Devotional Thought

Three months after the night of the Passover, Israel arrives at the foot of Sinai. They have walked out of Egypt, through the sea, and across the desert to this mountain, and now Moses climbs alone into the presence of God. What God says first is not a command but a memory: “Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.” Before a single law is given, grace is rehearsed. The Ten Commandments will be spoken to a people already rescued, already carried, already claimed.

Then the mountain burns. Thunder rolls, lightning flashes, the trumpet grows louder, smoke rises like a furnace, and the whole mount quakes. God descends in fire, and He sets bounds around the mountain because His holiness is not a small thing. The people tremble and stand afar off; even Moses draws near with awe. Here is the God who is not a comfortable idea or a manageable deity, but the living LORD before whom Sinai itself shakes.

And yet this same terrifying God calls Israel “a peculiar treasure,” “a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation.” He does not want slaves cringing at a distance; He wants a people who belong to Him. The commandments that follow are not chains but the shape of a freed life: worship Him alone, honor His name and His Sabbath, honor parents, guard life, marriage, truth, and contentment. They describe what it looks like when a rescued people live as His own.

We read this in June, in the ordinary rhythm of work and rest. Perhaps the grass needs mowing, the schedule is full, and the day of rest feels like an afterthought. Sinai reminds us that we serve a God who is both holy and near, who speaks with thunder and also carries us on eagles’ wings. The law still searches us, but it searches a people already loved. When we keep His commandments, we are not earning His favor; we are learning to live like the treasure He has already declared us to be.

Reflection

  1. God said He bore Israel “on eagles’ wings” before He gave them any commandments. How does remembering His rescue first change the way you hear His law?
  2. The people stood afar off in fear, but God called them His peculiar treasure. Where in your life are you keeping a safe distance from a God who is inviting you near?

Prayer

Holy LORD, who descended on Sinai in fire and smoke, and who carried Israel out of Egypt on eagles’ wings: we bow before Your majesty and rest in Your mercy. You have spoken, and the mountain quaked; You have redeemed, and our hearts are Yours. Teach us to fear You without fleeing You, to draw near through Jesus Christ, and to keep Your commandments not as slaves but as a peculiar treasure. Sanctify us today and tomorrow, wash us clean, and make us a kingdom of priests in the ordinary places where You have set us. In the name of Christ, Amen.
