Scripture Readings
- Primary Reading: Ruth 2-4
Key Verse
Ruth 3:9 — “And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.”
Devotional Thought
The barley harvest was ripe in Bethlehem, and a widow from Moab was gleaning in a stranger’s field. Ruth had left her own people and her own gods to follow Naomi and to trust the God of Israel, and now she stooped among the reapers, gathering what the harvesters let fall. The text says her “hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz” (2:3)—a word that sounds like accident, but reads like providence. Boaz came from Bethlehem with a blessing on his lips, “The LORD be with you,” and he noticed this foreign woman. He told her to stay close to his maidens, he charged his young men not to touch her, and at mealtime he handed her parched corn. She ate and was sufficed, and still had leftovers to carry home to Naomi.
Notice how Boaz spoke to her. He did not merely permit her to glean; he covered her with kindness. He had heard all she had done for her mother-in-law, and he prayed that the LORD would reward her, “under whose wings thou art come to trust” (2:12). Ruth had come to shelter under the wings of Israel’s God, and God was already answering that prayer through the wings of a generous landowner. Naomi, who had gone out empty, began to speak of a kinsman-redeemer. The rest of the story moves toward the threshingfloor and the city gate, where Boaz did not rest until he had settled the matter, took Ruth as his wife, and the LORD gave her conception.
And so a Moabitess became the great-grandmother of David, and the line ran on to Bethlehem’s manger. In August, when gardens and fields are heavy with what has grown, we do well to remember that our harvests are full of “handfuls of purpose” (2:16) dropped by a hand we did not see. Ruth went out to gather leftovers and came home with an ephah of barley, a redeemer, and a place in the family of God. God still writes such stories in ordinary fields, among ordinary people, in the middle of ordinary days.
Reflection
- Ruth went out to glean not knowing whose field she would enter, and God had already prepared the field, the owner, and the welcome. Where in your life might a “chance” circumstance actually be the hidden kindness of God?
- Boaz praised Ruth for trusting under the LORD’s wings, then became the very means of that shelter. Who in your circle needs you to be God’s wings for them this week—and will you do it?
Prayer
LORD God of Israel, under whose wings we have come to trust, we thank Thee for the way Thou dost order our steps, even when we cannot see Thy hand. As Thou didst lead Ruth to the field of Boaz and give her favour in his sight, lead us to the places and people Thou hast prepared for us. Make us like Boaz—watchful, generous, and quick to bless. And when we are like Ruth, strangers and needy, teach us to rest beneath Thy wings and to receive Thy kindness with humble hearts. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
