What Does the Bible Say About Family?

The Bible has a great deal to say about family. This study gathers passages from across Scripture and sets them out for reading and reflection.

What Scripture Says

Family in Scripture is never merely a private matter. It is a building block of God’s ordering of His people, and it is held accountable before Him. In Leviticus 20:5, God warns that when a man gives himself to Molech, He will set His face not only against that man but against his family, cutting them off from among the people. Deuteronomy 29:18 echoes this sober reality, warning against any man, woman, family, or tribe whose heart turns away from the LORD, lest there be a root bearing gall and wormwood. A family’s spiritual direction is weighty before God.

At the same time, family is the structure through which God organizes, protects, and blesses His people. Numbers 3:21 lists the families of the Gershonites by name. Joshua 7:14 shows judgment proceeding by tribe, then family, then household, then man by man. Judges 1:25 records that when a city was destroyed, a man and all his family were spared. In 2 Samuel 14:7, a woman pleads that the whole family has risen against her, seeking to destroy the heir and quench her last coal, leaving neither name nor remainder on the earth—showing how deeply a family’s survival mattered. Even in 1 Samuel 9:21, Saul describes his family as the least of all the families of Benjamin, revealing how families carried identity and standing.

Families also carry legacy and remembrance. 1 Chronicles 4:27 notes that Shimei’s brethren did not multiply like the children of Judah, a plain record of family fruitfulness. Esther 9:28 ordains that Purim be remembered throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city, so that the memorial would not perish from their seed. Ruth 2:1 introduces Boaz as a mighty man of wealth of the family of Elimelech, tying redemption itself to family line.

Yet Scripture does not treat family as ultimate. Jeremiah 3:14 declares, “I am married unto you,” and God says He will take one of a city and two of a family and bring them to Zion—His covenant claim transcends family bonds. Amos 3:1 addresses the whole family brought up from Egypt, and Micah 2:3 pronounces woe against a family God Himself devises evil against. Zechariah 12:12 pictures the land mourning, every family apart—David’s house, Nathan’s house, wives apart. Families may be judged, gathered, or grieved, but each stands before the LORD.

Living It Out

Take seriously that your household is a spiritual unit, not just a group of individuals sharing an address. The choices you make—what you worship, what you tolerate, what you teach—reach beyond you. Pray for your family by name, and refuse to let quiet drift become a root of bitterness. At the same time, remember that God’s claim on you is deeper than your family’s claim. If your family honors the Lord, thank Him and build on that. If it does not, you can still turn to Him, for He says, “I am married unto you.”

Practically, this means honoring the generations around you: remembering what God has done, telling it to your children, and keeping promises and commitments within your household. It also means releasing the illusion of control—families mourn apart, and each person stands before God. Do what is faithful in your home, entrust the outcome to Him, and let your family be a place where His name is remembered from generation to generation.

Reflection

  1. Is there any “root bearing gall and wormwood” in your family’s life—a pattern of turning from the LORD that you have excused rather than addressed?
  2. If God’s covenant claim on you is deeper than your family’s claim, where might you be choosing family approval over obedience to Him?
