Scripture Readings

  • Primary Reading: Mark 2-4

Key Verse

Mark 3:25 — “And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.”

Devotional Thought

In Capernaum, four men tear open a roof to reach Jesus. The house is so crowded that no one can even approach the door, but these friends refuse to be stopped by architecture or etiquette. They dig through the clay and lower their paralyzed companion into the middle of the room, and Mark tells us that Jesus saw *their* faith—not merely the sick man’s, but the faith of those who carried him. What a picture of intercession: friends who will break through a roof for the sake of a soul. And what does Jesus do first? He forgives sins before He heals legs. The scribes are right to be scandalized; only God can forgive sins. But that is precisely the point. The One who can say “Arise, take up thy bed, and walk” is the same One who can say “Thy sins be forgiven thee,” and He proves the invisible authority by the visible miracle.

From there, Mark moves quickly. Jesus calls Levi from the tax booth, and immediately the outcast sits at table with the Rabbi from Nazareth. “They that are whole have no need of the physician,” He says, and the words sting the self-righteous while they comfort the sinner. He redefines the Sabbath—”made for man”—and heals a withered hand even as the Pharisees plot His destruction. He appoints twelve ordinary men, and His own family thinks He has lost His mind. Then He tells parables of seed and soil, of a lamp and a mustard seed, showing that the kingdom grows quietly, secretly, imperceptibly, until the harvest comes.

And then evening falls on the Sea of Galilee. A storm rises, waves crash over the gunwales, and the boat begins to fill. The disciples—fishermen who knew these waters—are terrified. Jesus sleeps on a pillow in the stern. They shake Him awake: “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” He stands and speaks to the wind as if correcting a child: “Peace, be still.” The sea becomes glass. In the sudden silence, they are more afraid than before. “What manner of man is this?”

During Advent, we wait for the One who breaks through roofs, calls tax collectors, and calms storms. The season can feel crowded—too many demands, too little room. But the same Jesus who saw the faith of four friends sees yours. He still forgives sins before He fixes circumstances. He still speaks peace into the wind. And He still asks the question that echoes across the water: “How is it that ye have no faith?”

Reflection

  1. The friends of the paralytic broke through a roof to bring him to Jesus—what “roof” might you need to break through this Advent season to bring someone before Him in prayer?
  2. When the storm arose, the disciples feared Jesus did not care. In what area of your life are you tempted to believe He is asleep in the stern?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, we come to You as the paralytic came—helpless, carried by the faith of others, in need of what only You can give. Forgive our sins, for You alone have authority to do so. Speak peace into the storms that rage around us and within us. When we are afraid, remind us that You are in the boat. When we are crowded out by the noise of this season, quiet our hearts and let us hear Your voice. Make us like those four friends—willing to tear through any obstacle to bring others into Your presence. Grow Your word in us as seed in good soil, that we might bear fruit thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold. Amen.
