Scripture Readings

  • Primary Reading: 1 Corinthians 2

Key Verse

1 Corinthians 2:9 — “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”

Devotional Thought

What does this passage ask of you today? It asks you to stop trusting your own cleverness and to rest in the power of God. Paul wrote these words to the church at Corinth, a city famous for its philosophers, its public speakers, and its pride in human wisdom. When he first arrived there, he did not come with polished rhetoric or the kind of eloquence that would win a crowd. He came determined to know nothing among them except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. He even admits he was with them in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. This is the great apostle, and yet he stands before them without confidence in himself, because he wants their faith to stand not in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

In late January, the excitement of a new year has worn thin. Resolutions have quietly failed, and the days feel ordinary again. This is a good season to remember that God’s wisdom does not depend on our performance. Paul says the rulers of this world, had they known what God was doing, would never have crucified the Lord of glory. The cross looked like defeat and foolishness, yet it was the hidden wisdom God ordained before the world began. God’s greatest work came through what appeared to be weakness, and He still works that way in ordinary lives.

Paul goes on to say that eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man, the things God has prepared for those who love Him. But God has revealed them by His Spirit, for the Spirit searches even the deep things of God. The natural man cannot receive these things; they are spiritually discerned. This means the Christian life is not finally about intellect or talent. It is about the Spirit teaching us, comparing spiritual things with spiritual, giving us the very mind of Christ.

So today, if you feel small, unimpressive, or unsure, take heart. You do not need to manufacture faith by your own strength. The same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead is the one who opens your understanding and assures you that you belong to God. Come to Him simply, as Paul came to Corinth, and let your confidence rest in the power of God rather than in yourself.

Reflection

  1. Where in your life are you tempted to rely on your own wisdom or eloquence rather than on the power of God?
  2. If the Spirit alone reveals the deep things of God, how should that change the way you read Scripture and pray this week?

Prayer

Father, we confess how often we lean on our own understanding and measure ourselves by the world’s standards of wisdom and strength. Thank You that Your wisdom is hidden from the proud but revealed to the humble by Your Spirit. Teach us to know nothing among others except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Give us the mind of Christ, and let our faith rest not in the wisdom of men but in Your power. Open our eyes to the things You have prepared for those who love You, and keep us walking in the Spirit day by day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
