Scripture Readings

  • Primary Reading: 1 Corinthians 12

Key Verse

1 Corinthians 12:16 — “And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?”

Devotional Thought

In the dead of winter, when the trees stand bare and the garden lies dormant, it is easy to believe that nothing is happening. Yet beneath the frozen ground, life waits. Something similar happens in the church. Paul writes to the Corinthians, a congregation dazzled by spectacular gifts and tempted to rank one another by visibility. He refuses that game. The Spirit gives a word of wisdom to one, healing to another, helps and governments to still others — and every gift, however quiet or conspicuous, is given “to profit withal.” The question this chapter puts to us is not “How do I compare?” but “Am I serving the body with what God has actually given me?”

Paul reminds these former idolaters that no one can even say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Ghost. Salvation itself is a gift, and so are the gifts that follow. Notice his careful Trinitarian rhythm: diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit; differences of administrations, but the same Lord; diversities of operations, but the same God who works all in all. The unity is not in our uniformity but in the Giver. God has set the members in the body “as it hath pleased him.” Your place was not an accident.

Then comes the body. A foot, an ear, an eye, a hand — Paul lets the parts talk back, and their imagined protests sound like ours: “Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body.” How often we disqualify ourselves because our gift does not look like someone else’s. But God has tempered the body together, giving more abundant honour to the parts that seem feeble, so that there be no schism, but that the members care for one another. When one suffers, all suffer; when one is honoured, all rejoice.

Paul’s list in verse twenty-eight is gloriously ordinary: apostles and prophets, yes, but also helps and governments. The person who sets up chairs, who cooks a meal for the grieving, who quietly administers the church’s affairs — these are not the supporting cast. They are the body. This February, as winter lingers, you may feel hidden and unremarkable. But God has placed you where you are, and the body needs exactly what He has given you.

Reflection

  1. Which of your gifts have you been tempted to dismiss as insignificant, and how might God be calling you to offer it to the body this week?
  2. Where have you compared yourself to another believer rather than rejoicing that their gift complements yours?

Prayer

Father, we thank You that we were baptized by one Spirit into one body, and that You have set each of us in the body as it pleased You. Forgive us for envying the gifts of others and for despising the gifts You have given us. Teach us to honour the members who seem feeble, to suffer with those who suffer, and to rejoice when another is honoured. Make us faithful in the quiet, hidden work of love, that there be no schism among us, but that Your body may be built up in Christ. Amen.
