Key Verse

Job 29:15 — “I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.”

Devotional Thought

Some days the world feels like a mine, and we are deep underground. Job 28 opens with men tunneling for silver, sinking shafts into darkness where no bird has seen and no lion has walked, hauling sapphires and gold dust up from the rock. Job knows that kind of labor. He has lost his children, his cattle, his health, and the respect of his neighbors, and now he asks the miner’s question: after all this digging, where shall wisdom be found? The answer is not in the depths or the sea, not purchasable with the gold of Ophir or the topaz of Ethiopia. Wisdom belongs to God alone, who weighed the winds and measured the waters, and He gives it to man in a single sentence: “Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.”

Then the tone changes, and Job remembers. Chapter 29 is a portrait of a life that worked: God’s candle shining on his head, his children around him, the young men hiding and the aged rising when he entered the gate, the poor delivered, the widow’s heart singing, the blind and lame cared for as if he were their eyes and feet. He was a king among mourners. Chapter 30 is the wreckage of that same life—mockery from the children of men too base to set with his dogs, terrors pursuing his soul as the wind, bones pierced in the night, and the rawest cry of all: “I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me.”

Perhaps you know a version of this. The job that vanished. The health that failed. The voice in the night that prays and hears only silence. It is late May, school years ending, gardens coming in, and everyone around you posting their bright chapters while you are still living in chapter 30. Notice where Job finally lands. Not on an explanation, but on the God who “understandeth the way thereof.” And notice Psalm 61, the cry that fits a heart overwhelmed: “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” Job was that rock for the poor and fatherless. Now he must be led to the Rock himself.

The fear of the Lord is not the dread of a harsh master; it is the settled trust that God knows the place of wisdom even when we cannot find it. Job never receives his answer in these chapters. He receives something better—the God who holds the answer. When your own candle gutters, do not stop digging. Climb. The Rock is higher than you, and He has been a shelter all along.

Reflection

  1. In Job 29, Job remembers being “eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame.” Who in your life needs you to be that today, even while you carry your own chapter 30?
  2. When you cry and God seems not to hear, does your trust rest on His answers or on His character? What would it look like this week to pray Psalm 61 honestly?

Prayer

O God, hear my cry and attend unto my prayer. When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for Thou hast been my shelter and my strong tower. Teach me the fear of the Lord, which is wisdom, and the departure from evil, which is understanding. I cannot buy Thy truth with gold, nor find it in the depths; but Thou knowest the place thereof. Preserve me with mercy and truth, and let me abide in the covert of Thy wings, singing praise unto Thy name forever. Amen.
