The Bible has a great deal to say about war. This study gathers passages from across Scripture and sets them out for reading and reflection.
What Scripture Says
War appears early in Scripture as a feature of life among the nations. Genesis 14:2 records that the kings of the region “made war” with one another—conflict between Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, and their allies against other kings. From the beginning, war is presented as a real and bloody dimension of human history, not an abstraction. Later, in Exodus 1:10, Pharaoh’s fear of Israel’s growth was bound up with war: “lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us.” Even before Israel was a nation with an army, war was a threat that shaped how the powerful treated the weak.
When Israel became a people, war was organized and counted. Numbers 1:3 commands a census of “all that are able to go forth to war in Israel,” numbering them by their armies. Deuteronomy 1:41 shows the people arming themselves—”when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war”—after confessing their sin, ready to go up and fight as the LORD had commanded. Joshua 4:13 describes “about forty thousand prepared for war” passing over before the LORD to the plains of Jericho. Judges 3:2 gives a striking purpose: the generations of Israel were to be taught war, “at the least such as before knew nothing thereof.” War was not only endured but deliberately taught, so that each generation would know how to fight.
Yet Scripture never treats war as merely human strategy. 1 Samuel 8:12 warns that a king would take sons and set them to make “his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots”—a sober picture of how earthly power consumes people. 2 Samuel 1:27 laments, “How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!” 1 Kings 2:5 condemns Joab, who “shed the blood of war in peace” and put that blood upon his own garments. 2 Kings 8:28 shows the cost in flesh: Joram was wounded in battle. 1 Chronicles 5:10 records Israel making war with the Hagarites, who fell by their hand. And 2 Chronicles 6:34 envisions a people going out to war “by the way that thou shalt send them,” praying toward the city and the house built for God’s name.
Even so, deliverance in war belongs to the LORD. Job 5:20 promises, “In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.” Psalm 18:34 declares, “He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.” The same God who allows war also teaches hands to fight and rescues from the sword.
Living It Out
For the ordinary reader, these verses invite honesty about the world we live in. War is real, its costs are real, and its blood leaves stains—as Joab’s story shows—that cannot be washed away by victory. We should not romanticize conflict or treat it as a game. At the same time, Scripture does not call us to naive passivity. Israel counted its soldiers, prepared for battle, and even taught war to those who knew nothing of it, because defending others and standing against evil sometimes requires readiness and courage.
The deeper lesson is where our confidence rests. Pharaoh trusted in numbers and feared Israel’s strength; Israel was told to go out “by the way that thou shalt send them” and to pray toward God’s chosen city. Psalm 18:34 and Job 5:20 remind us that skill in battle and rescue from the sword both come from the LORD. Whether we face literal conflict or the daily battles of life, we do our part—prepared, sober, and honest about the cost—while trusting God to teach our hands and redeem us from the sword.
Reflection
- When you consider the wars recorded in Scripture—and the wars of our own time—do you find yourself trusting more in strength, numbers, and strategy, or in the God who teaches hands to war and redeems from the sword?
- Joab “shed the blood of war in peace” and carried that blood on his own clothing; what does that warn you about how you treat conflicts, even when you believe you are in the right?

Where These Come From
These verses are drawn from different parts of the Bible on purpose. A subject is rarely settled by a single line; the whole counsel of Scripture gives the shape of it.
