Scripture Readings
Devotional Thought
There is no reading assigned for today in the plan — no chapter, no psalm, no verse. The calendar turns to Wednesday, April 2, 2025, and the schedule simply rests. For most of us, that blank space feels like a problem to solve rather than a gift to receive. We are people who measure our days by what we produce, and an empty column looks like failure. But Scripture has its own word for the unassigned day: Sabbath. Not the seventh-day ordinance merely, but the deeper rhythm woven into creation itself — that God finished His work, looked at it, and rested. The blank page is not a gap in the story. It is part of the story.
Think of Elijah in the cave at Horeb, fed by an angel and told to sleep twice before he was ever asked to speak again. Think of the disciples in the boat while Jesus slept through the storm — His stillness was not negligence but authority. Think of the forty years in the wilderness, where manna fell daily and could not be hoarded, teaching Israel that tomorrow’s bread would come tomorrow. God has always built rest into the architecture of His dealings with His people. He does not need our constant motion to accomplish His purposes.
April is a strange month for this. The earth is waking, the light is lengthening, and everything in us wants to run. Yet the church has always known that even resurrection comes after a silent Saturday. Between the cross and the empty tomb there was a day with no recorded event, no sermon, no miracle — only waiting. If the Son of God could lie still in a borrowed grave on that day, you can lie still on this one.
So let today be unforced. Read nothing in order to report on it. Pray without a page in front of you. Sit with the Lord the way you would sit with an old friend who does not require you to fill the silence. The devotional life is not a performance, and the blank space in your reading plan is not an accusation. It is an invitation. Receive it.
Reflection
- What are you tempted to fill the silence with — and what might God be saying in the silence itself?
- When was the last time you rested without earning it, trusting that God’s work continues even when yours stops?
Prayer
Father, You neither slumber nor sleep, and yet You have called Your people to rest. On this unassigned day, quiet the part of me that measures worth by output. Teach me to sit before You with empty hands and no agenda, as Elijah was fed and laid down twice before he was sent out again. Let the stillness of this Wednesday do in me what no amount of striving could. Remind me that between the cross and the empty tomb there was a silent day, and that You were working even then. In the name of Jesus, who rested in the grave and rose in power, Amen.
