Scripture Readings
- Primary Reading: 2 Timothy 2
- Secondary Reading: Psalms 28
Key Verse
2 Timothy 2:14 — “Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.”
Devotional Thought
Paul writes these words to Timothy near the end of his life, a prisoner in Rome, awaiting execution under Nero. He knows the cost of following Christ, and he does not soften the call. He tells Timothy to endure hardness as a good soldier, to strive lawfully as an athlete, to labor as a husbandman who waits for the harvest. These are not gentle images, but they are honest ones. The Christian life is not a spectator sport. It requires discipline, patience, and a willingness to suffer for the sake of the gospel. Paul himself is in bonds, yet he declares with unshakable confidence that the word of God is not bound. Chains can hold a man, but they cannot hold the truth.
In the middle of this letter, Paul gives Timothy a charge that echoes through every generation: study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. This is not a call to academic pride but to faithful handling of Scripture. The contrast is sharp. Hymenaeus and Philetus had wandered from the truth, claiming the resurrection was already past, and their words ate like a canker. False teaching is not harmless. It spreads. It undermines faith. Paul urges Timothy to flee youthful lusts, to pursue righteousness, faith, charity, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. The servant of the Lord must not strive but be gentle, patient, and meek, instructing those who oppose themselves, hoping that God will grant them repentance.
Psalm 28 gives voice to the same confidence. David cries out to the Lord as his rock, begging Him not to be silent. He fears being drawn away with the wicked, those who speak peace to their neighbors while mischief fills their hearts. But then the tone turns. Blessed be the LORD, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications. The Lord is my strength and my shield. David’s heart trusts, and he rejoices. This is the posture Paul commends to Timothy: a heart anchored in God, even when circumstances are hard, even when enemies surround, even when the work is costly.
As March begins and winter slowly gives way to spring, we are reminded that growth requires endurance. The farmer does not harvest in the same week he plants. The soldier does not win the war in a single battle. The athlete does not receive the crown without training. Paul’s words to Timothy are words for us today. We are called to be vessels unto honour, sanctified and meet for the Master’s use. That means purging ourselves from dishonorable things, fleeing sin, and pursuing peace. It means handling God’s Word with care and reverence. It means trusting that the foundation of God standeth sure, sealed with this promise: The Lord knoweth them that are his.
Reflection
- Paul tells Timothy to commit the things he has heard to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Who in your life are you actively investing in, and who is investing in you?
- Psalm 28 describes the wicked as those who speak peace to their neighbors while mischief is in their hearts. Where might you be tempted to present a false peace while harboring something else inwardly?
Prayer
Lord, You are our rock and our shield. We cry out to You, knowing that You hear. Thank You for the faithful witness of Paul and Timothy, and for the unchained power of Your Word. Make us workmen who need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Purge us from dishonorable things and make us vessels unto honor, prepared for every good work. Help us to endure hardness as good soldiers, to flee youthful lusts, and to pursue righteousness, faith, charity, and peace. Guard us from false teaching and from the snare of the devil. Let our hearts trust in You, that we may greatly rejoice and sing Your praise. Feed us, lift us up, and keep us faithful until the day we see You face to face. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
Psalm Verse
Psalms 28:1 — “Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.”
