Scripture Readings

  • Primary Reading: Revelation 20
  • Secondary Reading: Psalms 49

Key Verse

Revelation 20:8 — “And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.”

Devotional Thought

Revelation 20 asks every reader a question that no amount of earthly success can answer: whose book holds your name? John sees a great white throne, and before it the dead, small and great, stand without rank or reputation. The books are opened, and another book is opened, the book of life. On that day the sea gives up its dead, death and hell deliver up theirs, and every man is judged according to his works. It is a sobering scene, and it lands with peculiar force as April turns toward May, when gardens are being planted and graduation announcements arrive and the world feels full of promise. But the promise of this life is not the promise of the life to come.

Notice what happens in the middle of this chapter. An angel comes down with the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain, and lays hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and binds him a thousand years. The deceiver of the nations is shut up and sealed in. Then John sees thrones, and souls of those beheaded for the witness of Jesus, who had not worshipped the beast nor received his mark, and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. This is the first resurrection, and over such the second death has no power. The same chapter that ends in a lake of fire begins with a chain and a seal and a throne shared with Christ. God’s people are not spectators in this story; they reign.

Yet even after a thousand years, Satan is loosed a little season, and he gathers Gog and Magog, as the sand of the sea, and compasses the camp of the saints and the beloved city. Fire comes down from God out of heaven and devours them, and the devil is cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, tormented day and night for ever and ever. The rebellion of the human heart is not cured by a long peace. Only redemption cures it. And that is exactly what Psalm 49 says: none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him, for the redemption of their soul is precious. Wealth cannot buy it. Monuments cannot secure it. Man in honour abideth not; he is like the beasts that perish. But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave, for he shall receive me. The book of life is not filled by the size of our houses or the praise of our peers. It is filled by the Redeemer who receives us.

Reflection

  1. If the books were opened today and your life were read aloud, what would your works reveal about where your trust has actually been placed — in the Redeemer, or in the wealth and honour that cannot follow you past the grave?
  2. Revelation 20 says the redeemed shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with him. How would that identity change the way you face the ordinary pressures and fears of this week?

Prayer

Lord God, you sit upon the great white throne, and from your face the earth and heaven flee away. We confess that we have trusted in things that perish, in riches that cannot ransom a soul, in honour that does not descend after us. Thank you that the redemption of our souls, so precious and beyond all price, was purchased by the blood of Jesus and not by our own hands. Write our names in the book of life, we pray. Bind the deceiver, guard your people, and keep us faithful until that day when we shall reign with Christ and the second death shall have no power over us. Amen.
