Scripture Readings
- Primary Reading: Proverbs 1-2
Key Verse
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction." — “Proverbs 1:7”
Devotional Thought
The opening chapters of Proverbs serve as a clarion call to the pursuit of wisdom. Solomon does not present wisdom as a mere academic exercise or a collection of clever aphorisms, but as a spiritual necessity. To “know wisdom and instruction” is to align one’s life with the created order and the will of the Almighty. When we walk in the fear of the Lord, we are not cowering in terror, but standing in awe of His holiness and sovereignty, recognizing that true understanding begins only when we acknowledge our dependence upon Him.
In our modern era, we are inundated with information, yet we often find ourselves starved for wisdom. We possess the ability to access the sum of human knowledge in a pocket-sized device, but this technical proficiency does not translate to a righteous life. The world offers many paths to “success” and “influence,” but these are often built upon the shifting sands of pride and self-reliance. As we see in the news of today—from the pursuit of energy dominance and massive industrial investments in our own Texas soil to the unsettling reports of planned attacks against our centers of government—the world is a place of restless ambition and volatility.
True stability is found not in the accumulation of power or the security of a physical fortress, but in the “instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment.” When we encounter the chaos of the headlines, the believer is called to a different standard. Rather than being swept away by the current of fear or the allure of earthly dominance, we are encouraged to seek the wisdom that comes from above. This wisdom teaches us how to navigate a broken world with grace, how to discern truth from falsehood, and how to maintain a heart that is anchored in the eternal rather than the ephemeral.
Let us therefore be a people who do not “despise wisdom and instruction.” Let us be humble enough to be taught, courageous enough to obey the Word of God, and steadfast in our commitment to a life of holiness. In a world of noise, let the quiet voice of the Spirit and the timeless truth of the Scriptures be the guide that leads us into the way of peace and righteousness.
Reflection
- In what areas of my life have I relied on my own understanding rather than seeking the wisdom that comes from the fear of the Lord?
- How can I consciously incorporate the pursuit of biblical wisdom into my daily routine amidst the distractions of the modern world?
Prayer
O Lord, the fountain of all wisdom and truth, we beseech Thee to grant us a spirit of understanding and a heart inclined toward Thy ways. Deliver us from the pride of the fool and the blindness of the simple; that we may walk in Thy light and be guided by Thy holy instruction. Establish our steps in righteousness, and keep our hearts steadfast in the fear of Thy name, now and forevermore. Amen.
