Scripture Readings
- Primary Reading: Proverbs 27-28
- Secondary Reading: Psalms 120
Key Verse
"Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth." — “Proverbs 27:1”
Devotional Thought
The Book of Proverbs often serves as a mirror, reflecting the stark contrast between the path of the wise and the path of the fool. In today’s reading, we are reminded of the fragility of human planning. To “boast of tomorrow” is not merely to plan for the future, but to assume a level of control over time and circumstance that belongs solely to the Creator. We walk through a world where the shift of a single day can alter the course of a life, a city, or a nation.
This reality is felt acutely when we look at the burdens carried by those in leadership and service. Recently, we have seen the community in Houston gathering in prayer for Pope Leo XIV following his lung cancer diagnosis. It is a poignant reminder that neither spiritual stature nor earthly office exempts one from the trials of the flesh. When the “tomorrow” we envisioned is suddenly interrupted by a diagnosis or a disaster, the boast of the self is silenced, and the need for a steadfast Hope becomes paramount.
Furthermore, the wisdom of Proverbs 27-28 calls us to a life of integrity and accountability. We are warned against the deceit of the lying lip and the pride of the self-righteous. In an age of noise and digital performance, the call to “let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth” is a necessary discipline. True character is not found in the accolades we claim for ourselves, but in the quiet fruit of a life lived in obedience to God.
As we navigate our own uncertainties, let us lean not on our own understanding or the perceived stability of our plans. Instead, let us adopt the posture of the Psalmist in Psalm 120, who cries out in distress and finds that the Lord hears. Our security is not found in the absence of trouble, but in the presence of a God who is attentive to the cry of the humble.
Reflection
- In what areas of my life have I been “boasting of tomorrow,” assuming control over things that only God governs?
- How can I move from a desire for self-praise to a commitment to integrity that speaks for itself?
Prayer
O LORD, who knowest the end from the beginning, grant us the humility to trust Thy providence over our own plans. Deliver us from the snare of pride and the deceit of the tongue, and establish our hearts in Thy truth. When distress surroundeth us, be Thou our refuge and our strength, for Thou art the only Rock upon which we may safely stand. Amen.
Psalm Verse
