Scripture Readings
- Primary Reading: Ecclesiastes 6-7
Key Verse
"All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled." — “Ecclesiastes 6:7”
Devotional Thought
The words of the Preacher in Ecclesiastes often strike the modern ear as cynical, but they are actually a profound diagnosis of the human condition. In chapters six and seven, we are confronted with the “vanity” of pursuing satisfaction through material wealth or worldly status. The Preacher describes a man who has every riches and honour imaginable, yet lacks the simple power to enjoy them. This is the great tragedy of the “hungry soul”—the more we feed the appetite of the world, the more insatiable it becomes.
We see this cycle playing out in our world today. The news is filled with the relentless tension of nations locked in power struggles and the pursuit of security through military strength. From the escalating standoffs in the Middle East to the sudden movements of embassy evacuations in Saudi Arabia, we witness a global appetite for control and dominance that is never truly filled. When we seek peace or security through the shifting sands of geopolitical maneuvering, we find only further instability and renewed anxiety.
The lesson for the believer is that our appetite was not designed to be filled by the “things under the sun,” but by the One who created the sun. If we spend our lives laboring for the “mouth”—the physical, social, and emotional cravings of this life—we will find ourselves in a state of perpetual longing. The only lasting satisfaction is found in a surrender to God’s sovereignty, recognizing that our true home and our true security are not found in the decrees of presidents or the movements of armies, but in the eternal promise of Christ.
Therefore, let us examine where we have placed our trust. Are we laboring for a satisfaction that the world cannot provide? In times of global unrest, we are reminded that the only rock that does not move is the Lord. Let us pivot our longing from the temporal to the eternal, finding contentment not in the absence of trouble, but in the presence of the Almighty.
Reflection
- In what areas of my life am I currently laboring for a satisfaction that continues to leave me feeling empty?
- How does the instability of the world around me serve as a reminder to anchor my security in God alone?
Prayer
O Lord, who art the Giver of all good things, we beseech Thee to turn our hearts from the vanities of this world. Deliver us from the snare of insatiable longing and teach us to find our true contentment in Thy grace. In the midst of worldly strife, be Thou our refuge and our strength, that we may walk in Thy peace and trust in Thy sovereign will. Amen.
