Scripture Readings

  • Primary Reading: Ecclesiastes 11-12

Key Verse

"Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;" — “Ecclesiastes 12:1”

Devotional Thought

The Preacher in Ecclesiastes does not shy away from the stark reality of time. He describes the fading of the body and the waning of the spirit with a poetic but piercing honesty. To “remember thy Creator” in the days of youth is not merely a suggestion to be religious while young, but a call to anchor one’s life in the Eternal before the “evil days” of decline and regret settle in. When we align our lives with God early, we build a foundation that can withstand the inevitable storms of aging and the unpredictability of the world.

We see the fragility of our earthly security in the news of our day. From the shifting political landscapes in Brazil to the precarious tensions and “messaging” between the United States and Iran, the world is in a state of constant flux. We watch as leaders rise and fall, and as nations teeter on the edge of conflict. These global shifts remind us that putting our ultimate trust in political stability or human diplomacy is like building a house on shifting sands. The only constant in a world of volatility is the sovereignty of God.

Furthermore, the Preacher encourages us to “cast thy bread upon the waters,” urging a life of generosity and proactive faith despite our ignorance of the future. In Texas, we see a record number of citizens engaging in the democratic process with registered voters hitting new peaks. While civic engagement is a duty, the believer remembers that the ultimate Kingdom is not won at a ballot box. Our true citizenship is in heaven, and our primary labor should be the cultivation of a soul that is ready to meet its Maker.

As we move through our week, let us not wait for a crisis to turn our hearts toward the Lord. Do not wait for the “evening” of your life to realize that the pursuits of the world were but “vanity.” Instead, offer your strength, your time, and your heart to the Creator now. In doing so, you find a peace that transcends the headlines of the day and a purpose that outlasts the ticking of the clock.

Reflection

  1. In what areas of my life have I been relying on “worldly stability” rather than the constancy of God?
  2. How can I practically “remember my Creator” today in the midst of my daily routines and responsibilities?

Prayer

O Eternal God, who holdest the times and the seasons in Thy hand, grant us the wisdom to seek Thee while Thou mayest be found. Deliver us from the vanity of this present world and anchor our souls in Thy truth. Guide our steps in the way of righteousness, and let our lives be a testament to Thy grace, now and forevermore. Amen.
