Jezrahiah — A Name in the Bible

Jezrahiah is a name found in the King James Bible, appearing 1 time in the text.

Who This Was

Jezrahiah was a Levite who lived in the time of Nehemiah, after the Jewish exiles had returned from Babylon to rebuild Jerusalem. He is mentioned only once in Scripture, in Nehemiah 12:42, in the account of the dedication of the rebuilt wall of Jerusalem. This was a time of great celebration and thanksgiving, as the people gathered to consecrate the wall that had been completed despite opposition and danger.

During that dedication, Nehemiah organized two large thanksgiving choirs to walk along the top of the wall in procession, giving thanks and singing praises to God. The singers in these processions “sang loud,” and Jezrahiah is named as their overseer. That means he was the one responsible for directing and leading the singers—a position of leadership in the worship of God on a day of national rejoicing.

The verse lists him alongside a group of priests and Levites—Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer—who took part in this celebration. Scripture says nothing more about Jezrahiah: no genealogy beyond his tribe, no later deeds, no words of his own. What we know is simply that on a day when Jerusalem’s wall was dedicated to God, he was entrusted with leading the singers, and they sang loudly.

The Name

The name Jezrahiah (Hebrew *Yizrachyah*) appears to mean something like “Yahweh shines forth” or “Yahweh has shone,” from a root meaning “to shine” or “to rise” joined with the divine name Yah. The meaning is generally regarded as well established along these lines, though the exact nuance is debated among scholars. It is a fitting name for a worship leader: the one who led the people in loud praise bore a name that declared the shining forth of God.

A Closing Thought

Jezrahiah appears once in Scripture, in a single verse, and yet he was given a role that mattered: leading the singers on a day of joy. Most of us will never be famous or widely remembered, and that is fine. What matters is not how many verses mention us, but whether we are faithful in the work God places before us. Jezrahiah led the praise, and the people sang loud. Whatever our assignment, we can do it wholeheartedly for God.
